2. Today's topic: Writing skills. Process to build up a text (III)

Step 3: Dealing with info.

The third step in the process to build up a text is related to how we deal with information: seeking, selecting and organising information.
There are 3 elements to be taken into account at this point, bearing in mind our final task (the Book of Inventors and Inventions) :

  1. Scaffolding: a) anchor posters external image 205969382928052744_demhrbbP_b.jpgTeachers' tasks: As we are going to deal with two text genres (biography of an inventor and description of the invention), we will need, at least, two texts anchor charts. Moreover, would Ss need any poster about grammar, vocabulary....? b)Would pupils need any activity to help them understand the characteristics of a biography? c) Graphic organisers are very good tools for students to select and summarise the info in their task. d) Take always into account that teacher can also help them by modelling all along the process: giving voice to her/his own reflection about the text, about decisions to be made, whether the info would be suitable or interesting for the reader.... Useful tips on modelling can be found on www.thisreadingmama.com (see the paragraph "What Kind of Things do I Model"). e) Promoting students' own reflection, usually by means of open-ended questions.
  2. Students will use digital sources (together with the material they can bring along for the task: their own books, library books...). But, how can we deal with them? Given the age of our pupils, we consider that the teacher has to provide Ss with a bunch of appropriate websites where they can find all they need. Thus, we, teachers, have to do a previous thorough search to ensure their appropriateness (according to content and language level). Children should be trained to deal with more than a source and to select appropriate info according to the previously prepared checklist (the kind of info required for a biography and the description of an invention that we inferred when analysing some models). Task to do at this point: Teachers have to select the digital resources they would offer their pupils for their info search.
  3. Foreseeing language needs. What kind of language will my students need for the task? This is the moment, before they start writing the draft, to do some grammar and vocabulary activities to reinforce language. Teachers' task: select suitable activities to practise necessary language.

3.1.Session 4: timelines with Dipity
As a summary of the content of our Big Book , we could add a timeline with our inventors and inventions. To do so, we propose to use an applicaation called Dipity.

3.2.Session 5: Publishing our pupils' written productions (uploading presentations and reports)
Our pupils' written productions could be made straight away online or be uploaded and published on the Internet once they finish them offline.
